#stoptoberStop smoking for October! Lung cancer is the most common cause of a death by cancer in the world, with nearly 354,000 deaths a year [1]. In the UK alone there were 35,371 deaths in 2012 [2]. Every year the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK begins a campaign at the beginning of October named Stoptober in which they promote users to quit smoking for the month so they're five times more likely to quit for good. For this reason I saw it necessary that Gravity Forum do our bit to promote this campaign and help those improve their health and prolong their life. If we can convince at least one person to quit smoking for the month then that makes this campaign worthwhile. We encourage you to promote #stoptober, help people live longer and prevent cancer further! Use the hashtag #stoptober on social media, buy the Stoptober badge to stand up to cancer, and promote the campaign to your friends. We understand that this campaign is primarily based in the UK but we believe it should be promoted where possible, regardless of where you live. For your friends', family's, and (future) children's sake: please stop for Stoptober![edit_reason]Added link[/edit_reason] Edited by Ferby, 30 Sep 2015, 10:55 PM.

My opinion on this is because Smoking is a problem that affects much more people around than breast cancer. If you look at the CDC's charts (Here) then you see that smoking related deaths are much more common amoungst women than breast cancer. That's why I think it is more appropriate to dedicate October to smoking rather than breast cancer. |

| sorry but your response is ignorant. Breast cancer as important then bunch f*cking idiots smoking by choice while breast cancer is not by choice. This month should be dedicated cancer in general. Plus our range on this forum is only 12-18 which most of us don't even smoke or anything.. In USA kids under the 18 can't buy cigs |

Literally cigs are easier to get than candy bars in the US for kids :). My friends smoke them all the time and just ask older guys to get a pack for them and give them the money to get it. And the older guys do it because at one time they were in the same position. So with that in mind, I think it's very possible that some people on Gravity under 18 smoke and therefore this is an appropriate topic here. Breast cancer, although it should be talked about a lot and supported, has only 0.01 percent of it's patients being under 20. But I am not trying to start any arguments, so yay! Stoptober! Smoking is bad, and I have some friends who are addicted now which is kind of sad. Don't smoke guys

The reason I chose to promote the Stoptober campaign rather than the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign (I should note I planned this alone, without input from the staff team) is simply because it would be more affective to promote people to stop smoking for a month for the benefit of their health than promoting awareness of a disease which I cannot see anyone apart of Gravity isn't already aware of. I understand breast cancer is a terrible thing and we should make steps to combat it, however I believe that promoting people to stop smoking would not only be a more affective campaign, but a more popular one. However that doesn't mean we're restricting you from donating to cancer research [1] [2] [3] [4]

Well, it'd be tough for me to stop smoking, given that I haven't even started yet, and have no plans to do so .However, I would encourage anyone who does smoke to give this a go !
